Discovering Your Nectar Through Visual Expression

Date

If you artistically observe Mother Nature, you will understand that colour is her language. It is this same language that allows you to experience emotion. Whether it’s the sense of tranquillity you feel when you see lush green fields — or the blue, far-stretched ocean that makes you feel calm and untroubled. Mother Nature can speak directly to human emotions.

With so much psychology attached to hues, artists have long accepted that colour sparks emotion, dating back to Picasso’s famous expression that colours “follow the change of emotion”. If you’re familiar with his work between 1901 and 1904, you’ll know his blue palettes of melancholy is an ode to this statement.

We are no Picasso, but we know how colours can create aesthetically pleasing work to evoke emotions. We see the effects on social media platforms. You know the visual content that can be consumed in a matter of seconds? If you begin to pay close attention, you’ll realise it’s the colours that are luring your subconscious into making that purchase.

Anyway, how do we create visually appealing content to spark emotion? When it comes to art, people find inspiration from many sources. But for us, Mother Nature plays a significant role in our creativity and is why Fruit Assembly is a major component of our work.

Fruit Assembly is a conceptual art movement that allows you to escape the monotony of traditional aesthetic creation. It involves arranging fruits with different still-life objects. It is a platform where creative thinking is explored and experimented with. What we love most about it is the freedom for innovation and creativity that transforms into visual expression.

With an abundance of colours present in a range of fruits, you have the freedom to create whatever you want. Whether it be explosive, sombre or ebullient pieces of work, the possibilities are endless. You can group fruits based on experimenting with only one colour — like avocados, limes, pears and apples (if green hues are the vibe you’re trying to create). Or you can integrate different colours using a range of fruits to discover what’s possible through curiosity and play.

Fruit Assembly is this effortless cool experience where you get to float with your ideas and explore different textures and elements. You have the freedom to think outside the box and forge relationships with two polar opposites. This is evident when we mix different surfaces and materials by adding jewellery, stones, books, vases and florals. Where artificial meets natural – two opposites that work in symbiosis. And we fall in love. Every. Single. Time.

Now we explore our favourite part of the experience. In essence, Fruit Assembly is a relationship between chaos and harmony. Chaos in the sense that arranging the fruits is not something that is preconceived. Rather, it is about going with the flow. Making mistakes. Letting things fall into place. Experimenting with the unknown. I mean, how cool is that? You don’t need to have a plan; you just go into this state of flow, where you zone out and really just focus on your art by letting ideas reveal themselves. It’s basically therapy.

And harmony. Harmony in the sense that sometimes connections appear through the chaos. It’s when you can see two random elements complementing each other. Or when two colours create the right tone. Or when something falls on your canvas, and it’s right where it needs to be. And this relationship is so beautiful, it reassures you that there is harmony that arises from chaos.

So, sit with the idea of harmony and chaos. But also, sit with the idea that the nectar present in fruits is actually a big representation of discovering the nectar within you. Art, at its root, is an expression, and you can use it to find who you are. But discovering your nectar is only possible through challenging the smallness in you. Questioning your ideas, concepts and what you believe in. Art gives you that platform.

Don’t let your creative thinking be defined by tradition, rules or what society deems as ‘artistic’. Go out and explore with materials and colours and anything that allows you to discover what kind of artist you are. We are all creatives (yes, you). It’s just a matter of finding your own visual expression.
